When he was 96, Elliott Royce learned the proper way to take a fall in a gymnastics class in Hawaii, and for the past 10 years, he’s been teaching other seniors this valuable skill. While you may not find an after-retirement position as exciting as Barbara’s or Elliott’s, if you follow their lead and do what you know—and particularly what you enjoy—you’ll be just as successful in the second act of your career! Here are some jobs that seniors have found to be a good fit for your skills and enjoyment level: Luxury chauffeur: Donning a chauffeur cap and getting behind the wheel gives you the opportunity to meet a variety of people and indulge your wanderlust. It is also a very flexible job, typically allowing you to name the time of year you work, your hours and even the type of passenger, such as bridal or prom parties or busy CEOs. Tech tutor: If you’ve remained abreast of the changing technology, why not share your knowledge with your peers? You’ll be able to relate better to the challenges experienced by folks your age than younger tech geeks. Most tech tutoring positions don’t require a 40-hour-a-week commitment and can even be worked remotely via the Internet. Researcher: Are you are detail-oriented and don’t mind spending hours sifting through information? Universities and businesses always need researchers to pore through books and websites to track down facts, locate important studies and results, and handle data collection for them. Many of these positions are part-time or on a project basis. Sports team workers: Want to support your favorite sports team without paying for tickets? Many teams hire workers seasonally or part time to do everything from ushering spectators to their seats to running the front office. You may even be able to see all or part of the games after your duties are finished! Adventurer: Maybe you always imagined your retirement days would be spent traveling, but you can’t quite afford it. Earn your keep while experiencing a different national park, ski resort or retreat each season through the Coolworks program.
