North Carolina has specific requirements and definitions for independent providers or agency direct-care services given to people in their homes.

Home Health is skilled home health care prescribed by a doctor for a senior. Services include skilled nursing care; physical, occupational and speech therapy; medical social services, and nutrition services.

In-home aide services (also known as Companion Care) help frail seniors with basic daily activities, home management and personal care. The goal is to help people stay at home as long as possible. Personal care with bathing, dressing, using the toilet, feeding and walking are provided by a certified nurse aide through licensed agencies.

Home management services These include cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping and other non-personal care to help someone stay at home safely. People who need both personal care and home management must be served by a licensed home care agency.

Adult day care Usually provided during business hours, adult day is at a center where people with moderate physical or cognitive problems get supervision, a meal, snacks and recreational activities. Limited government funding is available. Adult day can be combined with in-home care to provide more assistance.

Adult day health care Similar to adult day services, this center-based care supports independence and social, physical and emotional well-being – and provides some health care and referrals.

Care management Professional case/care managers coordinate the senior’s care, including assessment, care planning, plan implementation and monitoring so the senior can live at home.

Home-delivered nutrition program Nutritious meals are delivered at home through programs such as Meals on Wheels.

Respite This is short-term help by trained professionals who care for the older person while the caregiver gets personal time.

Hospice The terminally ill receive home health aide services, nursing care, medical social services, pain management, physicians’ services, homemaker services, medical supplies, crisis help and grief counseling to the dying and their families.
