Assisted Living

If you’re looking into assisted living facilities in Indiana, you have a lot of choices. There are almost 200 facilities in Indiana, and the number of assisted living facilities and senior apartment complexes is growing. Seniors in Indiana are in good company, too, since it’s projected that in 20 years, nearly 20% of the state’s population will be over 65. While Indianapolis is a large, vibrant city, Indiana is also known for its safe, friendly midwestern towns and lower-than-average cost of living. Whether you’re looking for a facility near Lake Michigan in the northern part of the state, or all the way down on the Ohio River, Indiana has a lot to choose from.

What Does It Cost?

According to Genworth’s 2020 Cost of Care Study, the median cost of a private, one bedroom accommodation in an assisted living facility in Indiana is $4,382. This works out to about $52,584 annually. Prices vary quite a bit throughout the state. The median monthly rate for facilities in the Bloomington area only $2,840, but Muncie area facilities are the most expensive, working out to a median monthly rate of $4,645.

What Do You Get?

Indiana’s assisted living facilities provide an array of services and fit a variety of lifestyles. Most communities’ monthly fees cover utilities, three meals a day, housekeeping, 24-hour emergency services, transportation, and help with bathing, dressing, and other daily needs. Extra services like memory care may cost more. Facilities that offer specialized care like Alzheimer’s care or advanced respiratory care may charge higher rates. Some facilities offer activities like cooking classes, yoga and Tai Chi classes, and excursions to museums and sporting events. Many communities offer classes and activities; but in others, residents pay extra fees to participate in activities.

What Determines Your Cost?

With the country-wide median monthly rate of $4,300, Indiana’s rates are about average for the United States. Location is one of the largest factors for price. Those looking to live in the state’s capital and largest city, Indianapolis, can expect to spend about $4,573 monthly. Living in smaller cities in the southern and middle part of the state, like Evansville and Bloomington, will cost a little less. Cities north of Indianapolis, like Muncie, Kokomo, and Lafayette are a little more expensive; these come in at between $4,500 to $4,800.

With assisted living facilities, your cost is also based on your level of care. Unless you’ve agreed on a contract with a CCRC (Continuing Care Retirement Community), your cost is likely to rise; especially if you need more specialized care. For example, while $4,382 is the median cost for assisted living in Indiana, the median cost of a private room in a nursing home facility is over twice that, at $8,486.

How Do You Make Your Choice?

The only way to find the right assisted living facility for you or your loved one? Visit the community. You can do preliminary research online, on the phone, or by talking to residents and families; but you can’t know if a facility is right unless you tour several facilities. Visit more than once, and spend some time getting to know the community.
