There’s No Excuse For Boredom When There’s A Senior Center In Your Town
Let’s face it. Sitting at home alone was never much fun when you were younger, so why would you do it now? It’s never too late to get out of the house, meet some new people, and enjoy some fun activities. And all that is waiting for you at your local senior center!
Check in with the senior center in your town for their schedule of events. The good times especially pick up around holidays, when you can get together with people from your community to celebrate the season. Senior centers are also known to feature concerts, plays, and even “senior proms,” so don’t be scared to hit that dance floor again.
But it’s not all just centered around special events. On any give day, you can walk into a senior center and find yourself passing the time in enjoyable ways. Like bridge or cribbage? It certainly isn’t hard to find a game to jump into. But that’s not all. You can play anything from table tennis to chess and everything in between. Of course, you could also just come in and catch a movie or relax and talk with some new friends.
Just like you always told the kids, there’s nothing more important than education. So did you really think you were done learning? Not at the senior center. Come on in and take a class in anything from piano to Spanish. You can also learn fun crafts, such as knitting or scrapbooking. And perhaps the most important classes you can take are those that keep you in the loop during this technological age. Most senior centers offer courses that will give you the skills you need to search for information on the Web, do online banking, or just stay in touch with family.
And it’s never a bad idea to get into shape! Check out your local senior center’s schedule for opportunities to get you heart moving, your muscles toned, and your waistline shrinking. Many centers offer group classes, so you won’t be alone as you learn some new steps, such as aerobics, Zumba or line dancing. And even better, you can get outside in the fresh air and warm sun to walk a 5k or jog in a fun-run. Don’t worry; they won’t make you run a marathon, but you can if you want!
But the most valuable thing you can really gain from attending you local senior center is friendship. There are plenty of fun and interesting people waiting for someone like you to talk to. All you have to do is walk through those doors.
